- The Kiha 47 8000 and 9000 series are vehicles that have undergone engine renewal on the Kiha 47 0 and 1000 series inherited by JR Kyushu.
- Depending on the time of renovation work, there are various differences in appearance, such as the presence or absence of louvers on the sides of the carriages, the presence or absence of toilet windows, the presence or absence of water tanks on the roof, etc.
- Some carriages have been modified to improve their cooling performance, with roof ducts and cooling equipment added to their exterior.
- The Kiha 47 series was widely used in Kyushu, but as it was replaced by a successor vehicle, the original engine vehicles were gradually scrapped, and now it is mainly used in the Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Saga, and Nagasaki areas.
- Kagoshima Depot has the largest number of Kiha 47 series 8000 and 9000 series vehicles in Kyushu, and they are in operation on the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line, Nippo Main Line, Kitto Line, and Hisatsu Line.

- <97962> is a set based on the vehicle currently in service at the Kagoshima Vehicle Center. It includes vehicles with different configurations from the <98153> and <98154> sets, allowing you to enjoy the wide variety of Kyushu's Kiha 47 series even more.
