- The XF-85 Goblin is a prototype fighter plane developed as a parasite fighter (parent-child fighter) to be stored in the bomb bay of a B-36 and transported to the battlefield in order to escort the B-36 ultra-long-range bomber invading Soviet territory during the Cold War.
- Development of this aircraft began in September 1945, a full-scale mockup was completed in June 1946, and two prototypes were ordered in February 1947 as the XP-85.
- The aircraft had a barrel-shaped fuselage measuring 4.52m in length, with the jet engine intake located at the nose and the nozzle at the end of the fuselage, and the main wings had a swept-back angle of 34 degrees.
- Based on the results of flight tests, directional stabilizers were added to the wing tips.
- The first aircraft, completed in October 1947, was primarily used for wind tunnel testing, while the second aircraft was used for flight tests from July 1948 on an EB-29B Superfortress.
- The second aircraft successfully completed its first free flight in August of the same year, but failed to return to the mother aircraft. It then attempted a second free flight in October, but successfully returned to the mother aircraft.
- The results of these flight tests showed that the aircraft would not be easy to return to its carrier aircraft, and due to the introduction of in-flight refueling and the increased range of escort fighters, development of the aircraft was cancelled in 1949.
