The EF81-400 series was introduced in 1986 as a replacement for the EF30, and was converted from a standard model to be used in the Kanmon Strait Tunnel connecting Honshu and Kyushu.
A distinctive feature of the 400 series is that it is equipped with a multi-heading general control device to enable multi-heading operation in the humid environment of the Kanmon Strait Tunnel.
In particular, after the transfer to JR, EF81-408 was given a distinctive paint job, completely changing from its previous livery to two shades of blue with a white stripe.
The same paint scheme was also applied to ED76, a paint change that completely changed the image of a locomotive pulling freight trains.
Only one EF81 400 series locomotive, No. 408, has been painted, making it a special piece of equipment.
In later years, they left Kyushu and were active on the Japan Sea Main Line, but were later reverted to their original livery and once again supported freight operations in Kyushu.
