In the 1960s, there were still many steam locomotives remaining on the national railway lines, and various diesel locomotives were developed to replace them.
The DE10 diesel locomotive was developed in 1966 to replace medium-sized locomotives for shunting and semi-mainline use, such as the 9600, C11, and C58.It adopted a unique five-axle arrangement called AAA-B to ensure adhesion while keeping the axle load to 13 tons, and to reduce lateral pressure on curves.
The locomotive was equipped with a single DML61ZA engine, the same as the DD51, and had a unique appearance with a long hood extending to one side.
The driver's cab is positioned sideways to allow for shunting.
The DE10 was a general-purpose locomotive well suited to Japan's railway conditions, with 708 units manufactured by 1978. There are many variations, including the DE11, which is specialized for shunting, the DE15, which is used for snow removal, and types introduced independently by private railways.
In the 2000s, some of JR Freight's DE10s were converted to shunting locomotives, and their paintwork was changed to distinguish them from those used on the main line.
DE10-1583 was manufactured in 1973 and assigned to Nogata Locomotive Depot, and was subsequently used consistently within Kyushu, including Moji and Kashii.
Since the 2000s, it has been designated as a shunting locomotive at Moji Locomotive Depot, painted reddish purple, and used at Moji Locomotive Depot until 2016.
