Product Description

--The powerful switcher of the railyard! DE11 early model

[Vehicle Introduction]
Until the end of the Japanese National Railways era, freight yards were located at key stations throughout the country, where shunting operations were carried out to rearrange freight cars according to their destinations and assemble train sets.
Locomotives used in freight yards required different performance characteristics than those used on main lines, such as high traction power and maneuverability to handle frequent changes of direction.
Diesel locomotives such as the DD12 and DD13 were developed to eliminate the need for steam locomotives in shunting operations, which had previously been carried out by steam locomotives. However, due to insufficient traction, they were unable to replace the steam locomotives. As a last resort to address this issue, the DE11 type diesel locomotive was developed in 1967.
The engine, bogies, and body structure were based on the DE10 type developed the previous year, but design changes were made to improve traction, such as adding concrete dead weight to increase axle load, omitting the steam generator (SG), and omitting the multiple-unit control circuit.
From 1970 onwards, a total of 116 units were manufactured, including the 1000 series with increased engine output and the low-noise 1900 and 2000 series. However, due to a nationwide reduction in freight trains, the consolidation of direct trains between hubs, and the closure of freight yards, the number of units rapidly decreased, and only 18 units were retained when Japanese National Railways was privatized in 1987.
DE11-11 was one of the early 0-series locomotives manufactured in 1968, and spent most of its life at Suita No. 1 Locomotive Depot until it was decommissioned in February 1987.
The front bogie was equipped with a DT132A type, and it retained the characteristics of the early DE11 models until the very end, such as the end beam without jumper plugs and the straight front handrails from top to bottom without SG hose hangers.
