The Jet Powered RDC #M-497 is an experimental vehicle developed as part of New York Central Railroad's high-speed rail research.
Based on the Budd Company's RDC-3 diesel railcar, it featured a streamlined cowl attached to one end of the front and a J47-19 engine, repurposed from a B-36 bomber, mounted on the roof, giving it a distinctive appearance. It was used for a total of three test runs on July 23rd and 24th, 1966.
On July 23rd, it set a new US rail speed record of 183.85 miles per hour (approximately 296 km/h). On July 26th, it completed its service with a press conference and a display of the actual train in New York City. After that, the experimental jet-related equipment was removed, and it operated as a regular diesel railcar.
This train still holds the unbroken record for the fastest rail speed on American public tracks.
