The E501 series is a commuter train that debuted in 1995 on the Joban Line's medium-distance service and is designed to operate on the AC electrified section between Toride and Tsuchiura.
In 2007, the successor E531 series became the main train, and the original E531 series was repurposed for local service on the Joban Line, including the installation of toilets.
In 2012, the 10-car trains also underwent equipment upgrades, including the replacement of pantographs with single-arm type and the conversion of destination displays to LED type.
As of August 2026, only 10-car train sets remain in service, operating only on some morning and evening trains between Mito and Kusano.
