The Musashino Line had long been served by the 101 series 1000 subtype trains since its opening in 1973. However, due to the lack of air conditioning and aging, the 103 series trains were transferred from other lines in 1984, replacing all of the 101 series trains.
To alleviate congestion, the trains were converted to eight-car formations starting in 1991, and this conversion was completed for all trains in 1996.
From 2002 onwards, the 103 series trains were replaced by the 205 series 5000 series, and all of them were retired in 2005, causing the orange 103 series trains to disappear from the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Moha 103-227 and Moha 102-382 were transferred from the Keihin-Tohoku Line to the Musashino Line in 1996 to complete the conversion to 8-car trains.
