[Actual vehicle introduction]
The Yo3500 series is a conductor's car of the Japanese National Railways that appeared in 1950.
It has been improved based on the pre-war Yo2000 type.
From the following year onwards, in addition to new cars, modified cars of other models were added.
The Shinetsu Main Line's Yokokawa-Karuizawa section (Usui Pass) has a steep gradient of 66.7 per mille, and in 1963 adhesion operation began using EF62 and EF63 locomotives.
On that occasion, the Yo3500, which had not yet been modified with a two-stage link undercarriage, was selected as the dedicated caboose.
For a long time, it was coupled to freight trains passing through Usui Pass, but due to the aging of the carriages and other factors, the number of cars decreased, and in 1984 the train was discontinued, meaning that it lost its purpose.
Later, when ED42-1 was restored in 1987, Yo3961 was fitted with a resistor to step down the voltage to 600V, and the two cars were coupled together and ran within the premises.
As of 2025, it is preserved in static form at the Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park.
