The 10-series passenger cars, which took the world by storm with their revolutionary lightweight structure, have spawned a variety of derivative series since the 1960s.
The Narohane 10 was introduced in 1958 as a combined second/third class sleeping car for the Chuo and Shinetsu lines, where there were constraints on traction constants on mountainous lines and where there was not as much demand for second-class sleeping cars as on main lines.
Unusually for a JNR passenger car, the carriage had an entrance platform in the center, with second- and third-class compartments at the front and rear, and this, combined with the sleek design of the 10-series passenger cars, attracted many fans.
In the 1960s, as the train was upgraded to a two-class service, it was renamed 1st/2nd class sleeping cars, the class band was painted light green, and the body color was changed to Blue No. 15. After 1964, due to the increase in weight caused by the introduction of air conditioning in the 1st class compartment, it was renamed Ohane 10.
Since its debut as the Narohane 10 in the Shinetsu region, it has been active on semi-express trains such as the Alps and Myoko, and even after being converted to air conditioning, it has been seen as the star of the Chuo Line, serving express trains such as Kamikochi and Kiso, and can also be seen in Shinjuku and Nagoya.
