──A living witness to history! The preserved car at the Usui Pass Railway Cultural Park

[Actual vehicle introduction]
The Shinetsu Main Line's section between Yokokawa and Karuizawa (Usui Pass) is a section with a steep gradient of 66.7‰ (per mille), and a special system called the Abt system is used, in which a pinion gear is installed in the center of the car body, which engages with the rack rail in the center of the track on which the train is running, allowing it to climb the slope.
The ED42 was manufactured from 1934 onwards as a replacement for the earlier ED40 and other models.
During basic operation, each train consisted of four cars, three of which were coupled closer to Yokokawa and one closer to Karuizawa, with passenger cars and other items sandwiched between them.
Towards the end of their life, they were sometimes combined with Kiha 82 series and Kiha 57 series, but in 1963 the Abt system was abolished and regular adhesion operation was introduced, and they were replaced by the successors EF62 and 63, and all of them were retired.
After its retirement, No. 1 was spared from dismantling, and in 1967 it was designated a quasi-railway monument and preserved in static form within the Yokokawa Station premises.
In 1987, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the electrification of Usui Pass, the train was restored to working order and ran within the station premises.
After that, when the Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park opened in 1998, it was preserved there.
You can still see its beautiful appearance in 2025.
